CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The UVA baseball team was eliminated from the ACC tournament Wednesday night with a 12-8 loss to Boston College.
The game lasted almost four hours and didn’t finish until after 2am Thursday morning.
BC scored five runs in the first inning off UVA pitcher Jay Woolfolk and got two more in the second inning before Woolfolk was pulled.
“From the first inning, Jay Woolfolk, they put pressure on us right away. Jay Woolfolk wasn’t himself,” says UVa coach Brian O’Connor. “That was his first start all year that he’s looked anything like that. That’s to BC’s credit.”
Boston College stole seven bases building a 9-4 lead. The ‘Hoos committed five errors in the game.
“We did not play the game like we had the last four weeks and that’s disappointing,” says O’Connor.
Virginia cut the deficit to just one in the 6th inning on a Henry Ford 3-run home run.
“Just proud of our offensive ballclub,” says O’Connor. “We fought back to get within one run. Henry Ford’s big 3-run home run we were within striking distance.”
Boston College scored three runs in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Virginia’s record drops to 32-18.
Coach Brian O’Connor feels his team deserves an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
“I think it’s important to look at our overall resume what we did in the back half of the year,” says O’Connor. “There are not many teams that have done what we’ve done. To go 16-11 in ACC play, I don’t care whatever metrics you look at. We were a game away from winning the league. “There’s never been a team that was five games above .500 in the ACC in the regular season and does not get into the NCAA tournament.”
The NCAA tournament brackets are released on Monday, Memorial Day.
