Top 10 Sports Stories in the Lowcountry of 2025

  • January 2, 2026

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) — As 2025 comes to a close, we count down the top sports stories in covered in the Lowcountry (and a little further out) during this year. We’ll reveal the first five on New Years Day and the top five on January 2nd.

Rory McIlroy wins The Masters

At number 10, we start a little outside of the Lowcountry, but it’s my list so I’ll allow it. Live 5 News’ annual coverage of the greatest golf tournament in the world down in Augusta saw a moment fans of the sport have been waiting years to see. Rory McIlroy finally completed the career grand slam by winning his first green jacket in a memorable final round that included a playoff against Justin Rose.

Berkeley girls basketball wins state championship

At number 9, history made at Berkeley back in March as the Stags girls basketball team won their 1st ever state championship claiming the 5A-2 title. It wasn’t just their first but the first female sports team to win a championship in school history. Berkeley would get a come from behind win in the title game beating Greenwood 60-54 to finish with a record of 24-4. Head coach Crystal Peace was named our Live 5 Coach of the Year and also honored by the state’s athletic coaches association.

Coastal Carolina goes to the College World Series finals

Number 8, a Cinderella run in Omaha for Coastal Carolina. After their loss to CofC in late April, Coastal would go on to win their final 14 regular season games, sweep through the Sun Belt tournament, the Conway Region and the Auburn Super Regional. In all, they won 26 games in a row to reach the championship of the College World Series but they would come up short in a pair of close losses to LSU.

James Island, Berkeley win baseball state championships

Number 7, a pair of baseball state championships in the Lowcountry. James Island would win their 2nd straight 5A-1 title in dramatic fashion with a walk off hit from Jake Amman in the deciding Game 3 against Lexington. Berkeley would win their 2nd state title in 4 years taking the 5A-2 crown beating Catawba Ridge in 2 games.

Hornets hold NBA camp, have exhibition with Thunder

Number 6, the NBA back in the Lowcountry for the 4th straight year, we had an NBA team holding preseason training camp at The Citadel as the Charlotte Hornets followed in the footsteps of the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers but this time, we got some game action as well as the Hornets hosted the reigning NBA Champion Oklahoma City Thunder for an exhibition at the North Charleston Coliseum. The Thunder would leave all of their star players at home but still managed to win in front of a sold out crowd.
