The Cubs activated Iowa right-hander Tommy Romero.

The Cubs signed catcher Reese McGuire again (after he opted out of his contact last week) and assigned him to Iowa. Catcher Caleb Knight went on the developmental list.

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs sunk the Columbus Clippers (Guardians), 10-2.

Tommy Romero started and allowed just one run on three hits over 4.2 innings. The one run came on a second-inning home run by Milan Tolentino. Romero walked two and struck out one.

Nate Pearson got the win under the “most effective reliever” rule since Romero was an out short of five innings. Pearson gave up just one hit and no runs over two innings. He walked two and struck out three.

DH Jonathon Long was 3 for 5 with a solo home run in the sixth inning, his fifth on the year.

Center fielder Christian Franklin was the Player of the Game after going 4 for 6 with five runs batted in—two two-run singles and a one-run single. Franklin scored one run.

Second baseman James Triantos went 2 for 3 with a double and two walks. Triantos scored three times.

Shortstop Hayden Cantrelle was 2 for 4 with a walk in his Triple-A debut. Cantrelle scored twice.

Left fielder Kevin Alcántara left this game in the sixth inning. No reason was given. Alcántara went 1 for 2 with a walk and two runs driven in.

Alcántara may have been taken out for not running out of the box.

Some poor baserunning on Franklin’s first single cost him a double and another RBI.

A two-run single for Franklin.

Long got a fat one and did not miss.

Knoxville Smokies

The Knoxville Smokies were extinguished by the Biloxi Shuckers (Brewers), 2-1.

Grant Kipp gave the Smokies four scoreless innings to start the game. Kipp gave up just one hit. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out five.

Antonio Santos pitched the next three. He gave up a two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning and got the loss. His final line was two runs on one hit. Santos walked two and struck out three.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez singled home right fielder Parker Chavers in the third inning for Knoxville’s only run. Ramirez went 1 for 3 with a walk and a steal. and Chavers was 0 for 2 with two walks.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs were snakebit by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 5-2.

Starter Erian Rodriguez gave up a home run to the first batter of the game and South Bend never caught up. He took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. Rodriguez walied one and struck out two.

DH Andy Garriola went 3 for 4.

Shortstop Jefferson Rojas was 2 for 4 with one run scored.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans were pinched by the Hickory Crawdads (Rangers), 6-1.

Will Frisch pitched the first four innings and took the loss after surrendering two runs on five hits. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out six.

DH Yahil Melendez went 2 for 4 and drove in the Pelicans’ only run with a single in the sixth inning.
