Saint Michael’s men’s basketball was the winning home school in the latest college hoops doubleheader at the Ross Sports Center. The men’s team benefited from an efficient day from beyond the three-point line, shooting 45 percent from deep in an 81-70 win against the Assumption University Greyhounds. The Purple Knights made 10 triples as a team, including six threes in the second half on 11 attempts. That mark was good for 54 percent in the final 20 minutes of play. Laitek Briscoe Jr. led that marksmanship, cashing in four threes and only missed on one attempt. That led him to drop a game-high 21 points. Greg Kenney also chipped in with 15 points, Zocko Littleton added 13 points and John Kelley rounded out the four double-digit scorers with 10 points. On the women’s side, the same two schools matched up, where it was Assumption who escaped a narrow upset against Saint Michael’s in a 59-58 win. The Greyhounds entered this contest against the Purple Knights with a 9-1 overall record. The Purple Knights were down by one with less than 10 seconds remaining, but a foul down the stretch sent Teagan Curran to the free-throw line. She drained both free throws to set up the 59-58 lead. With 1.9 seconds remaining, Saint Michael’s guard Amber Church was forced to shoot a deep three-pointer near halfcourt for the game winner, but her shot was off the mark. Teagan Curran posed problems for the Saint Michael’s defense, scoring a game-high 22 points on an efficient 6-12 from the field. She also cashed in two three-pointers and finished 8-10 from the charity stripe. Emily Collins also added 16 points off the Assumption bench. Jayla Tyler scored all 12 of her points in the second half, shooting 5-9 from the field. That tied another team-high 12 points from Bella Franchi, who shot 6-11 from the field.
