Star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown made it quite clear he was irked by not being named the NBA’s Player of the Month for the month of December with his 50-point explosion vs. the Los Angeles Clippers this past Saturday (Jan. 3) evening, the Georgia native putting the league on notice while burnishing his credentials as a bona fide Most Valuable Player candidate.
But Brown also had a subtler message to those in the media and among fans who have criticized his several offcourt interests, from philanthropy to his recent decision to become a streamer to help take control over the narratives that follow his play over the court of a season. “I think that’s the first narrative people like to go with,” said Brown via CLNS Media of those critiques. “It’s like you’re going to be distracted if you’re doing other things outside of your craft or what they’re paying you to do.”
“But everybody has a job, right? You all have a job,” he added. “They’re paying you to be media people, but you also do things outside of that, and nobody counts that as a distraction.”
“So I don’t see why anything else with what I do with my personal life should be a distraction either,” continued the Cal alum. “So I’m having fun with it — I guess we’re breaking down some narratives. I’m sure in the future you’ll see a bunch of athletes streaming in the future.”
“I feel like that’s… the new wave society has gone into, taking your own narrative … The old media outlets … I think they’re losing a little bit of merit. And I think people want to feel that authenticity. So if you want to get to learn (about) me a little bit better, just tap into my stream.”
