SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – An agreement to bring affordable housing to Monroe Street in South Bend is receiving more funding from the city.
This new, developing neighborhood is the brainchild of former Notre Dame women’s basketball star Devereaux Peters. It’s located at the southwest corner of Monroe and Michigan Street, where the Fat Daddy’s building long stood.
According to our reporting partners at The South Bend Tribune, the city’s redevelopment commission has agreed to increase its share of financial support of the project by a million dollars.
The development, appropriately named “The Monreaux,” will be home to 57 apartments. That’s down from the originally planned 60 apartments due to unforeseen rising costs of materials and resources.
Construction could begin as early as July.
