On Sunday, January 11, at 6 p.m. CT, the Minnesota Timberwolves (25-14) play host to the San Antonio Spurs (27-11). A game between two of the best teams in the Western Conference is certainly exciting. However, both teams have key injuries that could impact the game.
Let’s dive into a full injury report for both teams.
1/11 Timberwolves injury report vs. SpursAnthony Edwards (Foot) – QUESTIONABLETerrence Shannon Jr. (Foot) – OUT
Anthony Edwards has appeared on the Timberwolves’ injury report with “right foot injury management” over the past three games. However, he has played in each game. Now, with this game being a back-to-back for Minnesota, that could change things.
Edwards missed three games in December with a foot alignment. This injury hasn’t impacted Edwards’ play as he is averaging 29.8 points since returning to the court in mid-December. Regardless, if he’s not feeling 100 percent, it would make sense for him to take a night off.
If Edwards is absent, the Wolves would run most of their offense through Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels. The Spurs’ stifling perimeter defense poses a difficult matchup for Edwards if he plays.
Second-year wing Terrence Shannon Jr. hasn’t played since December 25 due to a foot injury of his own.
1/11 Spurs injury report vs. Timberwolves Victor Wembanyama (Knee) – QUESTIONABLEDevin Vassell (Adductor) – OUT
Third-year phenom Victor Wembanyama has been dominant when he has played this season, averaging 24.1 points while being the league’s best defender. However, Wemby has missed 14 games with separate calf and knee injuries. Wemby recently returned from a two-game absence with a knee injury. With today’s game being a back-to-back for the Spurs as well, it wasn’t a surprise to see Wembanyama pop up on the injury report.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Wemby played in both games of a back-to-back earlier this week. Wembanyama has come off the bench in the three games he’s played since returning from his knee injury, and it’s fair to expect that trend to continue if he’s cleared to play. If Wemby does play, it will be interesting to see how they react to his presence as a rim protector and try to defend him on the other end of the court.
Outside of Wemby, sharpshooting wing Devin Vassell remains out with an adductor injury. Vassell’s last game came on December 29 against the Utah Jazz. While the Spurs are 4-2 without Vassell, his presence as a secondary creator and 3-point shooter has been missed.
