Even if they haven’t heard the specific nomenclature, every NBA on NBC fan knows by now about the “City Edition” uniforms worn occasionally throughout the season by each of the league’s 30 teams (playing weekly on NBC and Peacock). These uniforms, as the name suggests, are meant to highlight something about each team’s hometown, whether we’re talking about the Rocky Mountains of Denver or the beautiful sunsets of Cleveland.

The Minnesota Timberwolves’ City Edition uniforms that pay tribute to Prince
Back in 2018, the Timberwolves debuted their new City Edition unis paying tribute to the late, great musician Prince Rogers Nelson, known to his fans as simply Prince. The legendary creator of Purple Rain, Sign O The Times, and many other incredible records was born and raised in Minneapolis, and called the Twin Cities area home his entire life, even building his iconic Paisley Park recording complex and home there.
When Prince died unexpectedly in 2016 at the age of 57, tributes from Minnesota institutions like the Timberwolves poured in, and the City Edition uniforms were a natural extension of those tributes. Prince was also a lifelong basketball fan and, famously, a basketball player himself, who could frequently be seen courtside at Timberwolves games, so it’s a perfect fit to honor his legacy.
So, how do the uniforms pay tribute to Prince? Well, the classic Timberwolves blue is augmented throughout by fierce purple highlights, Prince’s favorite color and the hue that came to define much of his image in the 1980s. The font is also a tribute, lifted directly from Prince’s Purple Rain album cover and feature film, and the whole uniform package was designed in collaboration with the Prince estate.

When the uniforms first arrived back in 2018, they quickly became fan favorites, and replicas were in high demand. Back in the fall, the Wolves announced that they’d revive the Prince City Edition for the 2025-2026 season, and they’ve already made appearances this year and will show up again soon.
