Pelicans wind up with No. 7 pick after NBA draft lottery

  • May 24, 2025

CHICAGO (WVUE) – The New Orleans Pelicans wound up with the No. 7 pick in next month’s NBA draft after the league’s draft lottery Monday night (May 12).

Cooper Flagg, the multi-talented forward who is leaving Duke University after his freshman season, is widely expected to be the top pick in the June 25 draft. The Dallas Mavericks won the draft lottery to be awarded the first overall pick.

Dallas won the NBA draft lottery for the first time in franchise history, despite entering the drawing with only a 1.8 percent chance of getting the top pick.

New Orleans entered the lottery with the fourth-best chance — 12.5 percent — of winning the No. 1 pick. Utah, Washington and Charlotte had the highest chances, with 14 percent each.

The Pelicans were hoping to win the lottery for the third time in franchise history. They won the first overall pick in 2012 and again in 2019, taking Anthony Davis and Zion Williamson, respectively.

Williamson, another former Duke player, was among the team figures representing the Pelicans at the lottery Monday in Chicago.

The lottery results set this draft order:

1. Dallas

2. San Antonio

3. Philadelphia

4. Charlotte

5. Utah

6. Washington

7. New Orleans

8. Brooklyn

9. Toronto (pick goes to Oklahoma City)

10. Houston

11. Portland

12. Chicago

13. Atlanta

14. San Antonio

The lottery only sets the order for the first 14 picks in the draft. The rest of the first-round — picks 15-30 — were determined by regular-season finish, though some of these picks have been traded many times over the years.

The rest of the first-round order, for now, is: Oklahoma City picks No. 15, Orlando No. 16, Minnesota No. 17, Washington No. 18, Brooklyn No. 19 and Miami No. 20.

From there, the final 10 picks in the first round are owned by Utah (21), Atlanta (22), Indiana (23), Oklahoma City (24), Orlando (25), Brooklyn (26 and 27), Boston (28), Phoenix (29) and the Los Angeles Clippers (30).
