PULLMAN, Wash. — The No. 9 Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-1, 5-0) and Washington State Cougars (8-10, 3-2) clash for the 153rd time Thursday at 7 p.m. The regional rivalry will air on CBS Sports Network.

The Cougars hold a 98-54 advantage in the series, but the Bulldogs have won nine of the last 10 meetings, including the last seven straight. WSU’s last win in the series came in 2010, when Klay Thompson scored 24 points to lead the Cougs to an 81-59 victory.

About Gonzaga

The Zags make the 78-mile trip to Pullman after a week off since beating Santa Clara 89-77 last Thursday. In that game, Graham Ike set a new Gonzaga career high with 34 points and 11 rebounds to give GU its 10th straight win, including a 5-0 start to West Coast Conference play. Ike’s 10th double-double of the season earned him his third WCC Player of the Week honor.

Since that win, GU fell one spot in the AP Top 25 poll for the second week in a row. The Zags are now ranked No. 9 after opening at No. 21 in the preseason poll.

Gonzaga is No. 8 at KenPom, with the sixth-best offense and 12th-best defense, making it one of six teams in the nation with both its offense and defense in KenPom’s top 12. The Bulldogs also sit No. 5 in the NCAA NET rankings, with a 3-1 record against Quad 1 teams and a perfect 14-0 mark in Quad 2, 3 and 4 games.

The Zags are led by their two bigs, with Ike averaging 17.8 points per game and 8.6 rebounds, while Braden Huff is also scoring 17.8 points per game with 5.6 rebounds. Tyon Grant-Foster is scoring 11.7 points per game and is the only other Bulldog averaging double figures.

As a team, Gonzaga averages 91.4 points per game (11th most in the nation), along with 43 rebounds, 20 assists, 8.5 steals and 10.6 turnovers, while shooting 52.6% from the field and 36.9% from 3-point range.

About Washington State

Washington State returns home after a hard-fought 88-82 loss to Saint Mary’s on Saturday in Moraga.

The Cougs trailed by as many as 18 points but pulled within two possessions on multiple occasions in the second half, cutting the deficit to three points with just over seven minutes to play. However, a trio of 20-point performances by the Gaels sealed the six-point loss for WSU. Wazzu was led by freshman Ace Glass with 24 points, marking his sixth consecutive game in double figures and a conference-game high.

After going 5-8 in nonconference play, WSU gained momentum to start WCC play and is third in the conference with a 3-2 mark, behind only Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga.

The Cougs rank No. 148 at KenPom, with the 139th-ranked offense and 165th-ranked defense. In the NCAA NET, the Cougs are No. 145 with a combined 0-7 record against Quad 1 and 2 teams and a 7-3 mark versus Quad 3 and 4 opponents.

WSU is led by its pair of double-digit scorers, with Glass averaging 16 points per game and ND Okafor averaging 10.1. Three other Cougs are averaging more than nine points per game: Tomas Thrastarson (9.9), Emeli Yalaho (9.7) and Rihards Vavers (9.4).

As a team, the Cougs are averaging 75.2 points per game, with 35.8 rebounds, 12.4 assists and 5.7 steals, while shooting 46.2% from the field and 34.3% from beyond the arc.

One major problem for Washington State this season has been turnovers. Wazzu is last in the WCC in turnover margin, giving the ball away 13.5 times per game. As WSU looks to pull off the upset, it will need to limit turnovers and rebound well.
