The Brooklyn Nets will have some decisions to make prior to the NBA’s trade deadline on Feb. 5, including which players they decide to trade for ahead of the deadline. Brooklyn has been brought up in plenty of trade rumors regarding forward Michael Porter Jr., but it seems that they are unlikely to consider a player whose value seems to be at an all-time low at the moment.

“Lastly, some around the league wondered if the Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets would also consider trading for Morant, but both scenarios have been deemed unlikely, according to league sources,” HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto reported on Friday. With guard Ja Morant seemingly falling out of favor with the Memphis Grizzlies, his name has come up in plenty of trade speculation, especially a team like the Nets that is still presumably looking for its point guard of the future.

Scotto’s report follows an article written by The Athletic’s John Hollinger in which he suggested that the Nets were a darkhorse team to trade for Morant prior to the deadline. The purpose of Hollinger’s piece was to explain the different situations in which the Grizzlies could trade Morant for something and/or someone of value and Brooklyn is one of the teams that is always on the prowl for more draft capital and young players.

“Finally, let’s talk about one deep dark horse: Brooklyn. With one trusted league source telling me that Michael Porter Jr. is a lock to move by the deadline so the Nets can sell high on his career year, it makes sense for the Nets to figure out who will be the centerpiece of their franchise a year from now,” Hollinger wrote. “Remember, Brooklyn owes a pick swap to Houston in 2027 and thus has no incentive to tank next season. They need some players.”

While Scotto’s reporting seems to put to an end any idea of the Nets trading for Morant, Hollinger suggested that any deal involving Morant could be part of a three-team deal since Memphis might not be particularly interested in Porter at the moment. With Scotto also recently reporting that the Nets could see Porter as part of the team’s future, there is a possibility that Porter stays and Morant isn’t a factor in Brooklyn plans before the deadline.
