MIAMI — Kel’el Ware found himself celebrated, tested and challenged as the Miami Heat regrouped for practice Tuesday at Kaseya Center following a week on the road.
The celebration was for Ware being selected a day earlier to the Rising Stars competition during All-Star Weekend, named among a group of emerging second-year players.
“We congratulated him before practice,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “I think it’s a good thing. I think anytime you can go out and see greatness, it’s a fun weekend. It’s not like that game is going to be an intense scrimmage. It’s more about being around the guys and seeing how they got to where they are.”
The test camp with Ware among the last off the court, as he appraised the strained right hamstring that had him out the final four games of the five-game western swing that ended with Sunday’s victory over the Phoenix Suns.
“The smart decision was, come back here, get treatment, and I feel good now,” he said, after testing his agility in a workout with guard Myron Gardner, a post-practice session that also included bumping with big man Keshad Johnson.
“I feel good now,” Ware said. “I feel like I would say I’m good to go. I just got to see what the staff says.”
As for the challenge, it appears that Ware will remain a reserve, as had been the case in his six appearances before being sidelined by the hamstring.
“I mean, I really just go out there and do what I can with my minutes,” he said. “And so it’s just try to impact the game that way. If my role changes, it changes.”
The Heat have largely thrived lately with a smallball approach that has featured Bam Adebayo at center, Andrew Wiggins at power forward and Pelle Larsson at small forward, dominant on the boards in their most recent games.
As for being selected for the Feb. 13 Rising Stars after being bypassed last year as a rookie, Ware equated it to making the McDonald’s All-America Game while in high school in Arkansas.
“It kind of brings me, I guess, the same joy as when I figured out I made the McDonald’s All-America,” he said. “It’ll be fun to be a part of a group like that, where everyone is on top of the game.”
Ware becomes the 13th player over the Heat’s 38 seasons selected for the Rising Stars competition following Khalid Reeves (1995), Kurt Thomas (1996), Caron Butler (2003), Dwyane Wade (2004), Udonis Haslem (2004), Wade (2005), Haslem (2005), Michael Beasley (2009), Beasley (2010), Norris Cole (2012), Kendrick Nunn (2020), Tyler Herro (2020), Precious Achiuwa (2021), Herro (2021), Jaime Jaquez Jr. (2024) and Alondes Williams (2024).
The Rising Stars features 21 NBA first- and second-year players, as well as seven G League players, to be divided into four teams.
The NBA rookie and sophomore pool for the Rising Stars game during All-Star Weekend: Matas Buzelis, Chicago Bulls; Stephon Castle, San Antonio Spurs; Donovan Clingan, Portland Trail Blazers; Cedric Coward, Memphis Grizzlies; Egor Demin, Brooklyn Nets; VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia 76ers; Jeremiah Fears, New Orleans Pelicans; Cooper Flagg, Dallas Mavericks; Kyshawn George, Washington Wizards; Dylan Harper, Spurs; Tre Johnson, Wizards; Kon Knueppel, Charlotte Hornets; Ajay Mitchell, Oklahoma City Thunder; Collin Murray-Boyles, Toronto Raptors; Derik Queen, Pelicans; Alex Sarr, Wizards; Reed Sheppard, Houston Rockets; Cam Spencer, Grizzlies; Jaylon Tyson, Cleveland Cavaliers: Ware.
