The Philadelphia 76ers paid a visit to the Charlotte Hornets on Monday afternoon looking to bounce back from a loss at home on Saturday afternoon. The Sixers had an opportunity to do so against a team they have had a lot of success against–Philadelphia had won 11 straight over the Hornets dating back to Nov. 23, 2022 entering the contest.

That streak ended in a thud. With Joel Embiid and Paul George sidelined on the first night of a back-to-back, the Sixers trailed the Hornets by as many as 50 and were blown out 130-93. Philadelphia struggled in a multitude of areas and were unable to do much right on Monday as it dropped to 24-21 on the season. Brandon Miller had 30 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets.

Kelly Oubre Jr. led Philadelphia with 17 points, VJ Edgecombe had nine points and six rebounds, Tyrese Maxey struggled with six points on 3-for-12 shooting and seven assists, and Quentin Grimes added 14 points and five assists. Jared McCain had 16 while Andre Drummond had four and seven rebounds.

Here are the player grades following the loss:

Tyrese Maxey: D

The star guard had a miserable day in this one. Maxey was unable to find a rhythm in the early going as the Hornets played fast, physical, and sent waves of defenders toward the All-Star starter in this one. To his credit, he stayed aggressive and didn’t let the missed shots get to him, and he made plays with his passing, but the Sixers were unable to overcome his struggles in this one. He had a tough time really finding good shots consistently. That was a big reason he struggled. The shots he received weren’t good enough.

The Sixers needed the backcourt to get going with the Hornets building a large lead in the first half and Edgecombe was able to make things happen with a wing triple and dunk in transition. Edgecombe did a solid job on the glass and giving the Sixers some production in a multitude of areas. However, his defense was a bit subpar in this one as he got caught on a number of screens that Charlotte set. Just a tough day for him.

Kelly Oubre Jr.: C

The Sixers needed somebody to get the scoreboard moving at the start of this one with the Hornets off to a hot start. Oubre put the ball on the floor and got to the basket to give Philadelphia some much-needed offensive production in the early going and played with a ton of energy. Overall, Oubre was the only one who really gave any type of real offensive production in this one, but it wasn’t enough for the Sixers to stay in this one.

Dominick Barlow: D

Moving back into the starting lineup with George sidelined, Barlow gave Philadelphia some hustle and high basketball IQ type of plays. He was able to get an easy basket just by moving well without the basketball and had a steal on the other end to get the Sixers moving. With that being said, he wasn’t able to contribute much in terms of actual production in this one.

Andre Drummond: D-plus

Receiving the start with Embiid sidelined, Drummond had an aggressive start. He had an offensive putback for a quick bucket, blocked a LaMelo Ball attempt, and then had a tough finish in the paint through contact. Overall, Drummond did what he does which is grab a high number of rebounds and give the Sixers extra chances to succeed. The issue was that they weren’t able to convert on many chances.

Jabari Walker: D-plus

Walker hopped off the bench and immediately brought a spark. He was aggressive on the defensive end as he was able to knock down a corner 3—Philadelphia’s first of the afternoon. Walker gave a good effort, but he wasn’t able to give a spark.

Quentin Grimes: C-minus

Grimes was aggressive in this one. He put the ball on the floor, put his head down, and got to the basket for opportunities. There were a few missed opportunities, but Grimes was able to make things happen by getting into the paint. He was a part of a few unfortunate plays as he was fouled on a 3 by Collin Sexton, which was reviewed and ruled a common foul. He then fouled Josh Green on a 3, which was reviewed and called a flagrant-1 foul. He found a rhythm in the fourth, but it was far too late by then.

Adem Bona: D

Bona had a tough initial stint. He was called for a defensive 3-second violation and then called for a moving screen offensive foul. He didn’t do much in his five minutes in the first half. Overall, he played hard, but wasn’t able to get much going.

Jared McCain: D-plus

The afternoon for McCain started off on a tough note. He airballed a corner 3 and then missed a wing triple off the offensive rebound in the same possession. He did have an aggressive move to the basket past Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel that led to a tough basket, so that was a positive development for him. He finally got some 3s to fall in the fourth quarter in garbage time, so the Sixers will certainly take that from him.

Trendon Watord: D

Looking for a spark, the Sixers turned to Watford in the first half, but he wasn’t able to do much. He missed first three of his field goal attempts in the first half, before getting a layup at the halftime buzzer on a Bona steal, and was unable to give the spark he normally does.
