CHICAGO (WLS) — A new offering is coming soon to the United Center.

Concert-goers and attendees of other special events who are 21 and older will soon be able to purchase THC-infused drinks.

RYTHM Inc. says the United Center is making history, claiming that it is the first major arena in the U.S. to offer THC-infused beverages at events.

“It’s a big deal. You know, Americans across the country are choosing THC drinks and to be able to offer this at a live venue, at the premier venue here in Chicago, continues to normalize, credentialize the industry and offer consumers what they want,” said RYTHM Inc. Chairman and CEO Ben Kovler.

Starting in February, THC drinks from Señorita and RYTHM Inc. will be available at concerts and live events at United Center for attendees 21 and over. However, the beverages will not be sold at Bulls or Blackhawks games due to league rules.

Three different flavors of Señorita THC drinks will be sold at the United Center – lime jalapeño margarita, mango margarita, and grapefruit paloma. Kolver said the fourth option, RYTHM Inc., is a drink that has a mix of THC and caffeine.

“People are not interested in being hungover. So, a hangover is not that cool anymore,” Kovler said. “A lot less drunk incidents, a lot less violence… And we see peaceful Uber lines. We see really smooth exits from the stadiums and things like that.”

Entertainment venues are hoping to latch onto what major retailers have already discovered.

“Here in Chicago with Binny’s, we’re seeing a THC aisle, and a lot more space, a lot more offerings for consumers,” Kovler said.

At Binny’s in Lincoln Park, there is an entire aisle dedicated to THC drinks and similar products. An employee told ABC7 that just six months ago, their THC product was contained to an aisle cap, but demand is on the rise, and customers are happy.

“Younger generations are definitely indulging a little bit more in THC than alcohol, so I think it’s really cool that they have that option to do that in a safe space,” said Binny’s customer Chris Kyles.

The drinks planned for sale at the United Center will contain 5 milligrams of THC. A toxicologist at Rush Hospital says these types of commercial beverages are pretty low concentration.

“THC, sort of commercial beverages are pretty low concentration, so like 2% of Delta 9 THC. And so it would be hard, just given the volume of the beverages, to take a really significant intoxicating amount,” said Rush Hospital Toxicologist Antonia Nemanich.

“If you’re drinking both THC beverages and alcohol and taking edibles, you know, that’s probably a recipe for disaster,” Menanich added.

And it is illegal to operate a vehicle above the legal limit, or 5 nanograms or more per milliliter of whole blood.

“I can tell you that the general public and practitioners, police, judges, the court system alike, we’re all still learning as we go here, even now, six years later,” said DUI and criminal law defense attorney Matt Gebhardt.

And unlike alcohol, there is no simple way to test for THC in a person’s system.

“It is difficult, and that’s not to say that people have a free pass to go out there and drive under the influence of cannabis, but it’s just a simple fact. Right now, the technology is a little bit behind where it is with alcohol related arrests,” Gebhardt said.

And as the demand for these drinks grows, there are legislative efforts locally to ban hemp-derived THC products.

Though, there is an exception for beverages and several other categories.

Señorita and RYTHM will officially kick off the partnership at the beginning of February with special giveaways and non-infused samples at two shows: The New Edition Way Tour with New Edition, Boyz II Men, and Toni Braxton on Feb. 4, and the Life Is a Highway Tour with Rascal Flatts, Lauren Alaina, and Chris Lane on Feb. 6.
