With the NBA trade deadline a week away, Warriors star Steph Curry isn’t losing sleep at night over who might or might not join him in Golden State.
Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo was the talk of the sports world Wednesday when news broke that Milwaukee reportedly is listening to trade offers for the two-time NBA MVP, with the Warriors coming up in several reports as potential suitors.
Golden State grabbed a 140-124 win over the Utah Jazz at Delta Center following hours of Antetokounmpo talk around the league, and Curry made it clear he isn’t paying attention to any of the rumors nor does he concern himself with ongoing discussions as the Feb. 5 deadline looms.
“We’ve always had a expectation as myself, Draymond [Green], just knowing the conversations are happening all the time,” Curry told reporters in Utah. “I don’t ever get into hypotheticals. It’s a waste of time, it’s a waste of energy. It’s not my job to do that. [Warriors general manager] Mike [Dunleavy] and the entire front office is, I’m sure, making calls, taking looks, seeing what’s going on, and then if there’s something material, something real, we have conversations about it and decisions are made.
“So that’s our process. It’s always been that way. I’m assuming it’s going to be that same way over the next week and a half, but when stuff happens, you’ll know.”
Curry still is playing like he’s in his prime at age 37, and with Jimmy Butler lost for the season to a torn ACL, the Warriors must make a move at the deadline if they want to help their franchise star and the team at large win another NBA championship.
This isn’t the first season Antetokounmpo-to-Golden State trade rumors have surfaced, of course, but now that there appears to be a real chance Giannis will be on the move, plenty expect the Warriors to give it their best shot.
Curry and Antetokounmpo have expressed a shared admiration over the years, but could they be Warriors teammates soon? For now, Curry is focused on winning basketball games — and when stuff happens, we’ll all know.
