New Orleans Pelicans guard Jeremiah Fears has been fined $25,000 by the NBA for his involvement in an altercation with Oklahoma City Thunder guard Lu Dort in Tuesday’s game at the Paycom Center.
James Jones, the NBA’s executive vice-president of basketball operations, announced the fine Thursday.
Dort was also fined $25,000.
The incident started moments after Fears rebounded a 3-point shot by Herb Jones with 0.2 seconds left. Fears put up a shot as time expired and appeared to be fouled by Dort. No call was made, ending the game.
Dort then shoved Fears. Then Dort shoved Fears a second time. The two grabbed each other’s jerseys while shoving each other. Players and coaches from both teams rushed to the floor to break up the altercation. No punches were thrown.
Fears had to be restrained. He was eventually escorted off the court and to the locker room by Pelicans’ security officer Sherman Mushatt and Jordan Dumars, son of executive vice-president of basketball operations Joe Dumars.
“It was a tough situation,” Fears said Thursday after practice. “ I feel like it could have been avoided a little bit. Obviously, it was a foul there late in the game. I think if it was called a foul late in the game, it would have avoided all that.”
Pelicans’ interim coach James Borrego and OKC coach Mark Daigneault both agreed with that assessment. Daigneault said after the game that a foul should have been called on Dort.
“I think that’s a foul on Dort,” Daigneault said. “If it was, they should put a whistle on that play regardless of the score and the time. Because if they do that, everybody stops playing and you legislate the situation as you normally would. But because they didn’t put a whistle on it, it’s the end of the game and they can do nothing about it and you end up with that situation.”
Borrego echoed similar sentiments after Thursday’s practice.
“Looking back, it could have been handled much better from the officials’ standpoint,” Borrego said. “They are human beings, too. It could have been handled better and I’m sure the NBA has made that clear, and they are handling it internally. They have made their decision and we move forward.”
There were no suspensions issued, so Fears will be available for Friday’s home game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
“I’ve had time to kinda think about it and relax and calm down,” Fears said. “It’s going good. I talked to my coaches and teammates as well and they told me don’t worry about it and just move on and get ready for this next game.”
