Southern Door’s girls basketball team won its third game in a row Thursday with a 53-29 Packerland Conference victory at Sturgeon Bay.
“We played well,” said Eagles head coach Dawn Thorson. “[We] still could have boxed out better, but we hustled and took some good shots.”
Southern Door, which avenged a 33-32 loss on its home court Dec. 11 to the Clippers, was able to score on the inside and outside during the rematch.
A two-point basket by Kyleigh Claflin gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead at 19-8. Chelsie Claflin made three three-point baskets in the first half, when one of her shots from behind the arc banked off the glass to go in.
More than half of Sturgeon Bay’s 15 first-half points came from long range with Makenna Coyhis also making three three-pointers.
The Clippers’ Regan Kasten made a pair of free throws for their final points of the half, then the Eagles went on a 7-0 scoring run to go in the locker room leading 32-15.
The Eagles, who have dealt with various injuries this season, lost 6-foot sophomore forward Alyssa Bouche with 2:41 left in the first half when she went down on the court and had to be helped off as she limped to the sideline.
“Injuries are hurting us, so hopefully we can stay healthy,” Thorson said.
Both teams struggled to score to start the second half when Southern Door outscored Sturgeon Bay 21-14 in the final 18 minutes.
Chelsie Claflin led the Eagles with 13 points, followed by Kyleigh Claflin with 10 and Chelsie Jacquet with eight.
Kasten led the Clippers with 13 points. Coyhis added nine points
Southern Door, which improved to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in the Packerland, hosts a conference game Tuesday against Algoma.
Sturgeon Bay (4-13, 2-8) hosts a non-conference game Feb. 5 against Green Bay East.
