The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to make a big push to sign defenders in the off season. However, the early-season Luka Doncic trade has left the Lakers with little financial room to maneuver this summer. A blockbuster signing seems unlikely unless the Lakers part ways with key assets.

Amidst the off season, Lakers star Austin Reaves is being linked with multiple moves away from Los Angeles. Various NBA Insiders have suggested that the 26-year-old will be the first to move to pave the way for a starting center.

Los Angeles Lakers has suffered on the defensive end, which was glaringly visible during the first round of the playoffs. Against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Lakers’ defense could barely hold the gate as Anthony Edwards caused mayhem, resulting in a 4-1 loss to the 17 time NBA champs.

Rudy Gobert and Julius Randle also exposed the Lakers’ fragile defense during key moments. With Anthony Davis’ exit, the side has struggled, especially against big teams and those as well with athletic players. While their offense has been a strong part of their game.

They have Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James as the primary ball handlers. With an already stacked offensive core, Reaves has emerged as the odd man out in potential trade discussions. This despite having a breakout season. Austin Reaves averaged 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game during the season.

Rumor Backlash from Austin Reaves’ Agent

Austin Reaves’ agent Aaron Reilly is not happy with all the trade talks involving his client. The top tier agent believes that Reaves has a lot to give the Lakers, and the next season is going to be a testament to that. This signals that Reaves does not want to leave Los Angeles.

Aaron Reilly while reacting to a highlight video involving Austin Reaves’ performance posted on X, “Next year is going to be a show. People really have no idea what’s to come. Keep putting him in trade rumors for second string centers.”

Reaves reportedly admires the State and remains committed to LA. But if anything, the Luka Doncic trade has suggested to the NBA world that no asset is untouchable. And if the Lakers front office believes they can get a star center, they could push their assets on the other side, including Austin Reaves.
