Cooper Flagg’s historic performance from Thursday was so great that it was ripe for comedy.
After the Mavericks rookie posted a record-setting night with 49 points in Dallas’ loss to Charlotte, Flagg had the eyes of the NBA world on him. Apparently, it even went beyond that.
On Saturday, Flagg, who set a single-game NBA record vs. Charlotte for points scored by a teenager, received a shoutout on Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” along with a little quip from SNL’s Michael Che.

“Not a great start to Black History Month,” Che joked after his set-up of the stellar game from Flagg, who also broke Mark Aguirre’s Mavericks franchise record for points by a rookie with the performance.
It beats the last time the Mavericks drew a mention on “Weekend Update,” as just about one year ago Kenan Thompson took some jabs at the Luka Doncic trade via a rather uncanny Kendrick Perkins impersonation during the weekly SNL segment.
The selection of Flagg altered Dallas’ fortunes, providing a desperately needed change given the turbulent months following the Doncic trade.
Kidd displayed his frustration, especially with officiating, after Flagg delivered his fourth-best offensive performance of the season.
