Domantas Sabonis

The Sacramento Kings seem to be in fire sale mode now as the NBA trade deadline approaches. They already traded Keon Ellis, and appear set to move on from other prominent players before the deadline on February 5.

One of the key players that seems bound to be traded is Domantas Sabonis. There had been trade rumors surrounding Sabonis dating back to the offseason, but with the deadline approaching they have intensified.

Adding onto this was the fact that the Kings ended up ruling Domantas Sabonis out ahead of their matchup against the Washington Wizards on February 1.

In their 5 p.m. ET updated injury report, the Kings have listed Domantas Sabonis as out for tonight’s game in Washington because of what the team said is lower back soreness. Sabonis had been shooting on the Capital One Arena court, and then he ended his shooting routine early.

It is clear a trade is close to happening, and one team that makes sense to trade for him is the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Sacramento Kings Trade Domantas Sabonis to the Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder are once again dominating the NBA this season as they hold a record of 38-11, and are looking to become back-to-back champions. While they have had success once again, they should still be looking for ways to further improve the roster if they are going to ensure they have a deep postseason run.

One name that has started to pop up in trade discussions that the Thunder could move on from is Isaiah Hartenstein. If this ends up being the case, this fully opens up the door for the Thunder to look to trade for Domantas Sabonis.

Domantas Sabonis would be an upgrade over Hartenstein, and would pair well next to Chet Holmgren in the frontcourt. Sabonis is someone who rebounds at a high level, can pass the ball efficiently, and can score from all three levels. Even with Sabonis being in his 10th year at the NBA level, he is still playing efficiently with averaging 15.4 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

This would be a full-circle Sabonis. After being drafted by the Orlando Magic in 2016, he was traded to Oklahoma City with Victor Oladipo for Serge Ibaka. Returning there and joining the Thunder, who are now contenders, would be ideal for Sabonis.
