With Jayson Tatum expected to miss the 2025-26 season due to his Achilles tendon tear, the Boston Celtics are expected to make some roster moves. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis are among the names being discussed as potential trade chips. Holiday, 34, has three years remaining on his $134 million deal.

However, it would appear that the Dallas Mavericks aren’t put off by such a significant salary. In a May 26 edition of his “SteinLine” newsletter, veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein noted that Nico Harrison could explore ways to bring the two-time champion to Texas. Of course, the Mavericks would need to figure out how to ensure Holiday’s salary fits into their own cap situation.

“League sources say Dallas is expected to at least explore whether there are any feasible trade pathways to Boston’s Jrue Holiday — complicated as that would likely be given the three years and $104 million still left on Holiday’s contract,” Stein reported.

Holiday is a proven winner. He is precisely the type of addition a team like Dallas should be coveting. Of course, they’re unlikely to be the only team keeping tabs on Holiday. Nevertheless, Holiday could still try to find a way to remain in Boston. He’s previously shared his desire to remain with the franchise despite Tatum’s injury and the impact that’s had on the team’s shot at success.

“I think we still have a really, really great opportunity and a great window to be successful and win a championship again,” Holiday said. “I think the talent that we have on this team, not only on the court, but the coaching staff, all the way up to Brad [Stevens], has been amazing. So, yeah, the opportunity to win is now, and I still want to be a part of that.”

Unfortunately for Holiday, the decision on whether to stay or leave is out of his hands. Stevens must do what’s best for the franchise. And if that means moving on from the veteran guard to get closer to ducking under the second luxury tax apron, then that is likely what the team will do. This summer could be very busy for the Celtics, and the roster could look significantly different by the time all is said and done. Watch the “Taylor Talks Celtics” podcast on:
