Forward Kawhi Leonard had a 25-point performance as the Clippers utilized physicality in the paint to take down the Phoenix Suns 117-93 on Sunday.
Los Angeles outplayed the Suns inside, dominating the boards 63-35 with a 64-18 advantage in points in the paint. Center Ivica Zubac recorded his 24th double-double of the season with 14 points and a season-high 20 rebounds.
Guard Kobe Sanders started in place of guard James Harden, who missed the game for personal reasons, and scored 12 points. Leonard added eight rebounds in his 27th consecutive game with 20 or more points. The Clippers had a lot of success, shooting 52% from the field on the night.
It was a back-and-forth affair to begin as the Suns were able to contain Leonard and Zubac in the first quarter. Despite the slow start from its main duo, Los Angeles’ supporting cast was able to take advantage as forward John Collins and Sanders combined for 11 points in the opening quarter.
Phoenix shot 45% from 3-point range in the first frame but the Clippers led 24-20 after 12 minutes of play.
A 15-2 run across four minutes in the second quarter allowed the Clippers to stretch out its lead. Phoenix forced seven turnovers in the first half to keep the game within shouting distance.
Los Angeles was aggressive, attacking the paint and earned multiple trips to the free throw line in the second quarter. The Clippers earned 34 trips to the free throw line in total on the night. Three point shooting from the Suns and Clippers’ turnovers allowed Phoenix to stay in the game.
Coming out of the break at halftime with the 49-43 lead, the Clippers continued to dominate the paint and as Phoenix’s shooting struggled, the Clippers pulled away. The Suns shot just 33% from the field on the night and were held to under 100 points for just the sixth time this season.
Guard Grayson Allen led Phoenix with 23 points and eight assists. Forward Dillon Brooks contributed 22 points and guard Jordan Goodwin added 12 points off the bench. The Suns were without guards Jalen Green and Devin Booker.
After a tough 6-21 start to the NBA season, the Clippers have won 17 of its last 21 games and are inching closer to the .500 mark.
Los Angeles will now have two games at home before a four-game road trip coming up.
