Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg closed the month of January in explosive fashion, recording two consecutive 30-point double-doubles and making history by becoming the first teenager in NBA history to do so.

The NBA announced Flagg as the winner of the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for the third consecutive time on Tuesday afternoon.

It’s the second time in franchise history that a first-year player has earned the Rookie of the Month honor in each of his first three months in the league.

In January, Flagg averaged 20.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 47.8% from the field. He had six 20-point performances out of 12 games and four double-doubles in the month, including a career-high 49 points last Thursday against the Charlotte Hornets.

The last Mavericks player to win three straight Rookie of the Month honors was Luka Doncic in 2018-19. He won the award four consecutive times and went on to be named Rookie of the Year.

The only other rookie to earn at least three Rookie of the Month honors was Jay Vincent in 1981-82.

Flagg certainly is set up to follow that path, but his main competition for the Rookie of the Year award is former college teammate Kon Knueppel, who also won his third straight Rookie of the Month award for the Eastern Conference.

Knueppel held more than his own in last Thursday’s rookie showdown. He led the Hornets with 34 points and knocked down a franchise-record eight 3-pointers. Overall, he’s averaging 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists on 42.5% from beyond the arc.

Flagg is averaging 19.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals through 45 games this season.

Flagg will represent the Mavericks at All-Star Weekend in the Rising Stars Game, which is Feb. 13 at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Calif.

Despite Flagg’s success, the Mavericks ended the month on a four-game losing steak and sit 12th in the Western Conference.
