A little over a year since the Luka Dončić trade, Dončić and Lakers have continued their success, while the Mavericks have struggled
It’s been just over one year since the Los Angeles Lakers acquired guard Luka Dončić along with two other players from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for center Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick on Feb. 2, 2025. Here is how the two teams involved have fared since the blockbuster trade.
Lakers:
Since he was traded to the Lakers, Dončić has not slowed down as he’s kept up his elite play. This season with the Lakers, Dončić is averaging 33.4 PPG — which currently leads the NBA —, 8.7 APG and 7.9 RPG as the Lakers are 30-19, good for fifth place in the Western Conference.
Doncic also won Western Conference Player of the Month for January and moved up to second in the NBA’s MVP rankings.

Since the trade, Dončić has averaged 31.3 PPG, 8.2 RPG and 8.0 APG, which is right in line with how he performed in Dallas as he averaged 28.6 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 8.3 APG in 422 games with the Mavericks. The Lakers made it to the playoffs last season, but lost in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round.
Dončić is guaranteed under contract with the Lakers for at least until the 2027-28 season. He has a player option for the 2028-29 option.
Mavericks:

The Mavericks, on the other han,d haven’t seen as much success since trading away Dončić. Dallas made it to the NBA Finals in the 2023-24 season with Dončić, but hasn’t been back to the playoffs since. Dallas was 26-24 and in ninth place the day of the trade. After the trade, the Mavericks went on to finish the season under .500 at 39-43 and lost to the Memphis Grizzlies in the Play-In. This season, the Mavericks are 19-31 and in 12th place, 3.5 games out of a Play-In spot.
Earlier today, the Mavericks traded Davis — the main piece the Mavericks got in return — along with guards Jaden Hardy, D’Angelo Russel and Dante Exum to the Washington Wizards in exchange for forward Khris Middleton, guard AJ Johnson, guard Malaki Branham, forward Marvin Bagley III, two future first-round picks and three future second-round picks.
In his time with Dallas, Davis saw limited playing time because of injury — have only played in 29 games for the Mavericks since being traded. Davis strained his left abductor in his first game with Dallas, which kept him out for a few weeks, and he has only played in 20 games this season because of a calf injury earlier in the season and a hand injury he sustained in January.
Many fans to this day still express anger over the Mavericks trading Dončić.

The other play sent to Dallas — Christie — has seen regular playing time this year, as he has played in 46 games, starting 37 of them while averaging 13.1 PPG, 2.2 APG and 3.4 RPG.
