Bronny James’ first season as an NBA player likely did not go the way he had hoped.

The former USC Trojan appeared in just 27 games with the Los Angeles Lakers as he struggled to find playing time and the bottom of the net. He finished the year shooting just 31.3% from the field and 28.1% from three during his sporadic minutes.

While the numbers and film were ugly when James did get run, there were highlights he can build off of.

Not only did he make history playing alongside his father, LeBron James, he also gained valuable experience being around the team and was effective in his time in the G-League.

James averaged 21.9 points, 5.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds in his 11 games with the South Bay Lakers. A promising sign that there is still plenty of room for growth with just a few more reps.

Following the Lakers’ playoff exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, James declared he would get those reps next at the Las Vegas Summer League.

While it’s not uncommon for second-year players to participate in the annual event, it also is not a guarantee either.

James’ quick confirmation that he will play in Las Vegas is an encouraging sign that he is serious about his development and is eager to improve ahead of a potentially bigger role next season.

With roster changes likely on the horizon for the Lakers, the team may lean on their younger players to step into the rotation, including James.

It remains to be seen how much better James fares in his sophomore campaign, but so far, he is at least taking the right steps to help his odds.
