Action ahead of the NBA trade deadline is intensifying, and with just under 24 hours until the deadline passes, Domantas Sabonis and the Sacramento Kings are key players in trade talks.
The Kings have bottomed out this season, currently sitting dead last in the Western Conference, and with a rotation chock full of veterans, it’s expected that the front office is going to tear things down to get a fresh start.
That process has already begun. Sacramento dealt Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroeder to the Cleveland Cavaliers, receiving De’Andre Hunter in return.
That deal received mixed reviews from analysts, but it shows that Sacramento is willing to head down a new path.
Next up on the chopping block could be Sabonis; the versatile big man has reportedly garnered interest in the trade market, particularly from the Toronto Raptors.
But if the Raptors can’t make things work financially, could we see another team swoop in and pull Sabonis out of Sacramento?
Let’s discuss the possibility.

Domantas Sabonis Trade to the Spurs: Deadline Proposal
The San Antonio Spurs have spent the year establishing themselves as the NBA’s next up-and-coming threat. With a pool of young talent, highlighted by Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle, and more, running the show, the Spurs have put the NBA on notice.
A string of three consecutive victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder in December firmly placed San Antonio in the contender conversation, and consistent play over the course of the year has them in second place in the uber-competitive Western Conference.
Ahead of their inevitable playoff run, Fran Leiva of Fadeaway World believes the Spurs could beef up their lineup by going out and trading for Sabonis.
“In this structure, Sabonis becomes the connective tissue, and Wembanyama gets cleaner catches, more weak-side chaos, and more ‘finish the play’ reps instead of having to initiate everything,” wrote Leiva.
Should The Spurs Make a Domantas Sabonis Trade?
Frankly, I just don’t see the point behind this one.
There’s no doubt that Sabonis possesses an intriguing skill set and would form a frightening frontcourt tandem with Wembanyama, but Sabonis just doesn’t check the boxes of what the Spurs need.
Sabonis is a monster on the glass, but San Antonio already gets that with Wembanyama. As a team, the Spurs rank 4th in total rebounds per game and 3rd in defensive rebound rate.
Sabonis is also a fantastic playmaker and offensive facilitator, but again, the Spurs have no shortage of players who can generate clean looks for others.
The duo of Wembanyama and Luke Kornet is getting it done in the frontcourt, and there’s no need to take on Sabonis’s bloated contract.
The Spurs are already in a good spot, but if they feel the need to get aggressive and make a move to improve their title chances, there will be better trade targets than Sabonis.
