MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The Memphis Grizzlies have decided to finish the season with Ja Morant, a player whose impact extends far beyond the basketball court.
Morant, one of the league’s most electrifying stars, is widely considered “must-see TV,” drawing attention not only to the Grizzlies but to Memphis itself.
Since the start of the year, trade rumors surrounding Morant have dominated NBA conversations.
The organization has opted to keep Morant, but questions still linger about the team’s future and what Memphis would look like if the player who helped put the franchise on the national map were no longer wearing a Grizzlies jersey after the season.
Fans and sports analysts say Morant’s departure would bring a noticeable shift in the city’s basketball atmosphere.
“Ja Morant took it to another step, another level,” said Greg Gaston, a sports commentator with WHBQ Sports 56. “He made the Memphis Grizzlies a familiar name to people all around the world. When you talk about tourism or season tickets, his impact is undeniable…
“…Fans hate rebuilds, and if you lose the combination of Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr., you lose your leaders, your best players, and your excitement. There’s no question it would hurt them at the box office.”
Morant has appeared in just 20 games this season. With 33 games remaining, the Grizzlies are focused on closing out the year strong, even as roster changes and uncertainty continue to surround the team.
Earlier Thursday, ESPN reported that no NBA teams are currently interested in making a serious trade offer for Morant, further solidifying Memphis’ decision to keep him through the season.
