The Birmingham Squadron announced it is moving its operations to be closer to its NBA parent club, the New Orleans Pelicans, marking the end of the team’s run in Birmingham.

In a statement to ABC 33/40, the organization said the decision comes after evaluating its basketball operations and determining it would be best for the G-League team to be located nearer to the Pelicans.

“We have valued our time in Birmingham it has been an incredible partnership with the city and the arena,” the statement reads. “As we assess our basketball operations, we have determined that it is best moving forward that the G-League team, Squadron, are located closer to the Pelicans team.”

The team also thanked Birmingham leadership, including BJCC Executive Director and CEO Tad Snider, Mayor Randall Woodfin, and local fans for their support.

The Kenner City Council, in Louisiana, met Thursday and approved a resolution expressing support for relocating the Squadron to the Kenner Pontchartrain Convention & Civic Center. The vote passed 6–0, with one council member absent.
