Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. is in the midst of the kind of season that led many to believe that he could be named an NBA All-Star for the first time in his career. Porter was recently found to not be Brooklyn’s representative in the All-Star Game as the Eastern Conference head coaches picked other players and the sharpshooter reacted to the snub.
“I thought I had a chance, for sure. But I knew it was out of my control. I know the record probably plays a part in it, even though there’s guys that are in there that don’t have the most amazing record,” Porter said of the snub, according to ClutchPoints’ Erik Slater on Wednesday. Porter received the ninth-most votes prior to the Eastern Conference starters being announced, but the fact that he wasn’t a reserve showed that coaches were weighing different factors than the other bodies of voters.
“I thought there was a chance. I thought it was a toss-up. It is what it is,” Porter continued, per Slater. “That was a tough day, because I thought there was a chance, but today’s a new day. I’m still blessed, I’m still highly favored, and I’m excited to be able to do what I do, whether I got the All-Star or not.”
Porter, 27, is averaging 25.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 47.4% from the field and 38.7% from three-point land in 40 appearances for the Nets this season. Porter was playing the best basketball of the season in December when he averaged 28.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 51.5% from the floor and 47.5% from deep, but his performance since then has been a different story.
Since Jan. 4, Porter’s numbers are down to 23.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 43.4% from the floor and 34.8% from behind the three-point line. While many around the league believe that Porter should have made the All-Star team in some capacity, he took some time to reflect on the snub, but is looking towards the future trying to remain positive.
