The Atlanta Hawks were one of the most active teams heading to the trade deadline, as they overhauled their roster starting with the deal that sent Trae Young to the Washington Wizards.
Aside from the Young deal, one of their most notable moves was acquiring Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for former All-Star big man Kristaps Porzingis.

Kuminga, who is just 23 years old, fits nicely on a team that is building around 24-year-old All-Star Jalen Johnson. Hield, for his part, gives Atlanta a veteran presence as it attempts to contend for a playoff spot.
For now, however, Hawks fans will have to wait a little bit to see one of their new players in action.

Prior to his trade, Kuminga last played for the Warriors on Jan. 22 against the Dallas Mavericks. He suffered a bone bruise in his left knee during the contest and has been sidelined ever since then.

According to the Hawks, Kuminga will be sidelined until after the All-Star break, which is scheduled from Feb. 13 to Feb. 18. NBA action returns on Feb. 19, with Atlanta visiting the Philadelphia 76ers on the same day.
“Jonathan Kuminga, who sustained a left knee bone bruise while playing for Golden State at Dallas on Jan. 22, will be re-evaluated following the All-Star break and an update will be provided at that time,” the Hawks announced on Saturday.

It remains to be seen if Kuminga will show enough progress in his recovery to be able to play for the Hawks after the break. Clearly, though, Atlanta is staying patient with its new acquisition.
Kuminga averaged 12.5 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 278 games played since being taken seventh overall by the Warriors in the 2021 NBA Draft. This 2025-26 season, he was putting up 12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
Unfortunately, the former NBA G League Ignite star wasn’t able to get a consistent and prominent role with a Dubs team that has always had championship expectations.

For what it’s worth, Kuminga was reportedly “shocked” by his trade to Atlanta since the “Hawks aren’t a team that his camp kept contact with.” Atlanta was said to be an “out of left field” destination for him, per Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports.
Regardless, Kuminga is expected to have a larger and more impactful role with the Hawks once he returns from injury.
