The Minnesota Timberwolves went into the trade deadline with their eyes on Giannis Antetokounmpo and came out with bench contributor Ayo Dosunmu.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks dealt Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards. Included in the deal, as a throw-in, was former Wolves guard D’Angelo Russell. Except… it appears DLo is refusing to play in DC.
One time MN Timberwolves guard D’Angelo Russell still a problem
According to Wizards’ GM Will Dawkins, D’Angelo Russell is “not going to report until we try to figure out what’s best for him and us in our future.”
He was thrown in as part of the Anthony Davis trade from Dallas, and it sounds as if his time in DC will close before it starts.

“In the trade, we brought back four players…With D’Angelo [Russell] we talked to him, talked to his representatives. At the time, he’s not going to report until we try to figure out what’s best for him and us in our future.”

Why Russell wants to sit out remains a mystery, but it’s no surprise that he is causing drama. It’s followed him throughout his career, including his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves — who essentially traded Russell for Mike Conley a few years ago, because D-Lo hated playing with Rudy Gobert.
As a rookie, he quickly earned the ire of his Los Angeles Lakers teammate Nick Young for outing him cheating on Iggy Azalea. The two have been at odds since.
Russell played two years on bad Ryan Saunders teams before lasting just a year and a half with Chris Finch. DLo played 58 games last year split between Brooklyn and the Lakers. The 29-year-old suited up in just 26 games this season for Dallas — averaging a career-worst 10.2 points per game on 40.5% from the field.
