OKLAHOMA CITY –
After the transfer of a young 21-year-old from the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder fans warmly welcomed Jared McCain to the roster during his debut against the Huston Rockets last week.
Our Thunder Reporter Steve McGehee had a chance to catch up with McCain, in an exclusive 1-on-1 to talk Thunder expectations, motivations and TikTok dances.
Watch the full conversation above, of follow along for the Q&A:
Q: Welcome to Oklahoma City and the Thunder. How have the last three days been for you?
A: It’s been pretty crazy — life’s kind of turned upside down. But OKC is an organization I’ve admired since my pre-draft process. I feel blessed and thankful to be a part of it.
Q: You’re always smiling. Where does that come from?
A: That’s true! I get it from my mom — she’s always smiling too.
Q: Are you glad that first game is out of the way? What was that like?
A: Definitely. I was just excited to get out there. That crowd was insane. I’m super thankful to play basketball here and to be part of this team.
Q: When you looked around at your new teammates, did you think, “This team’s pretty good”?
A: For sure. I’ve watched and scouted this team before, and they’ve been great for years. It’s an honor to be part of it, and I just hope I can fit in.
Q: A lot of teammates are in street clothes right now. Hoping they’ll be back soon?
A: Yeah, definitely. Hopefully they’ll be back soon.
Q: What can you do to help out this team down the stretch?
A: Whatever coach needs — defense, spacing, energy, pick‑and‑roll decision‑making. I just want to be efficient and help the team however I can.
Q: Are you over the news of being traded, or does it still feel surreal?
A: Honestly, it still feels surreal. It was emotional and shocking since I didn’t see it coming. I’m still getting settled, moving my stuff, and finding a place to live.
Q: But you’re joining a winning team that could win it all again.
A: Exactly. That’s a blessing. When you get traded, you want to go to a winning team — and to join the defending champs is an honor.
Q: Your TikTok game is strong. Jalen Williams has a good one too. Is there a competition?
A: Not yet! But maybe down the line. The vibes on this team are great, so maybe we’ll do something together soon.
Q: This is a tough upcoming road trip — Lakers, Suns, then back home for the Bucks. What do you guys have to do to get some wins?
A: For me, it’s about finding my fit — how I can help offensively and defensively. The team already has great chemistry, so I’m confident we’ll figure it out.
