Even the most casual NBA fans know that big men who play with Luka Doncic will be enjoying some of their best basketball whenever they share the floor with him. Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes is one of the latest people to testify to The Don’s impact on his game. It’s clear in the way he plays that he’s enjoying having the Slovenian point guard throw lobs whenever he’s involved in the action.

The 25-year-old center is playing some great basketball as a reliable rotation option for a Lakers squad that is packed with playmakers. However, it’s his incredible on-court chemistry with Doncic that might have earned him a ticket for a chance to become the 2026 Slam Dunk Contest winner.

Hayes is giddy at the thought of participating in the competition, and his demeanor towards the competition clues into the type of performance fans can expect from the former Texas Longhorns standout.

Hayes said in a postgame presser that his participation in the upcoming contest is a childhood dream and that he’s excited to put his name alongside some of the game’s greatest dunkers.

“I’ve always dreamed about being in the dunk contest, that’s something you do as a kid,” Hayes said. “For me, I was always big into the dunk contest, if you guys can’t tell by the way I play. I’m just excited.”

Lakers fans understand Hayes’ athleticism and will be interested to see if he can become the new Slam Dunk champ. He’s been more than just a high flier for JJ Redick’s roster, averaging 6.4 points and 3.8 rebounds in 42 games. His two-point field goal percentage is at a career high of 77.5%, which highlights the impact Luka had on his shot quality.

The playing field is open as Mac McClung, the first NBA player to win the contest in three consecutive years, chose not to participate in this year’s contest. The three other competitors are San Antonio Spurs rookie Carter Bryant, Miami Heat forward Keshad Johnson and Orlando Magic guard Jase Richardson.

If his in-game dunks are anything to go by, Hayes should be one of the most entertaining participants in the Slam Dunk Contest.
