NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets forward Josh Minott had never been traded in the middle of an NBA season until this year when the Nets acquired him from the Boston Celtics prior to Thursday’s deadline. Brooklyn did not make any splashes during this trade season, but Minott is someone that could bring a different element to a team that has been struggling for the past couple of months.
“I’d say for me, it’s just about staying true to the values I’ve learned over my three years, or three-and-a-half years in the league, in terms of just work ethic,” Minott said prior to Saturday’s 127-113 win over the Washington Wizards. With the Celtics looking to shed as much payroll as possible prior to the deadline, Minott was sent to the Nets for just cash considerations, but that could work to Brooklyn’s favor moving forward.
“You said it yourself, I’ve been around some, some winning organizations, for sure. So, I’m just understanding what we did right, understanding what it takes to really make those playoff pushes, stuff like that,” Minott continued. “So, I’d say for me, it’s just a matter of just remembering all the stuff that you know we value, and things like that, and then just sort of just bringing that over, carrying that over.”
Minott, 23, is in the midst of the best season of his career as he’s averaging 5.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game while shooting 50.7% from the field and 44.2% from three-point land in 33 appearances this season. Minott, who spent the first three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves before joining the Celtics this year, is in a position to pick up some playing time under head coach Jordi Fernandez.
While Minott has proven that he can be a productive member of teams with playoff aspirations, he is in a different situation with the Nets rebuilding around some of their younger players. However, Brooklyn is dealing with an extended slump at this point in the season and while Fernandez is trying to juggle playing time around 10 players, Minott could be the kind of player to bring a different element to one of the youngest teams in the league.
