BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (WCTV) – The Georgia High School Association suspended a dozen athletes after a brawl occurred during a boys’ basketball game between the Bainbridge Bearcats and the Cairo Syrupmakers Saturday.

Nine Cairo players were suspended, the Grady County School District announced in a social media post Monday morning. Two players involved in the game were suspended and seven players were suspended for leaving the beach, according to the school district.

The school district went on to reveal that three Bainbridge players were also suspended: one from the game and two for leaving the bench.

The game is expected to be completed Monday night in Bainbridge and no fans will be permitted, according to the Grady County School District.

The news comes a few days after the Bainbridge Bearcats hosted the Cairo Syrupmakers Saturday in Bainbridge. During the basketball game between the two teams, a brawl occurred between two players, according to sister station WALB.

On Monday, Decatur County Schools issued a statement, thanking administration and law enforcement for their effective response to the altercation.

“As Bearcats, it is always our goal to create school/athletic environments that model sportsmanship and values that will always serve everyone well in both sports and life. Thank you to those who helped control and deescalate the event at BHS.”

On Sunday, Bainbridge High School Principal Christopher Bryant also issued a statement, stating that “fighting is never acceptable and will never be condoned.”
