4 players ejected after benches-clearing brawl in Charlotte Hornets game

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Four players were ejected after a benches-clearing brawl broke out during the Charlotte Hornets game on Monday night.

The fight came as the Hornets were locked into a tight game with the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons.

Charlotte — who was on a nine-game win streak — got off to a strong start in the Feb. 9 matchup but went into halftime down 61-57. The Hornets retook the lead early in the third quarter, only for the Pistons to take it right back.

With all the back-and-forth to start the third quarter, it didn’t take long for tensions to rise.

Charlotte’s Moussa Diabate fouled Detroit’s Jalen Duren while Duren was shooting. The initial foul did not seem like anything out of the ordinary on replay but the two did bow up at each other afterward. During the bowing up, Duren took his own hand and placed his palm squarely over Diabate’s face.

Diabate and fellow Hornet Miles Bridges took offense to Duren’s action and that’s when the melee started. Diabate threw some punches in the direction of Duren while players and staff from both teams tried to hold him back.

Bridges at first seemed to have escaped the worst of the fight, only for Pistons player Isaiah Stewart to come off Detroit’s bench. Bridges also then threw a punch as a second skirmish broke out on the other side of the court.

By the time the dust settled, Diabate and Bridges were ejected for Charlotte while Duren and Stewart were tossed for Detroit. A replay of the fight can be watched at the bottom of this story.

Later in the game — in a completely unrelated incident — Hornets head coach Charles Lee was ejected after he vehemently argued a foul call. Lee, too, had to be held back.

The Pistons went on to win 110-104, and ended the Hornets’ win streak.

MVP contender Cade Cunningham scored 33 points for the Pistons, while Charlotte’s trio of LaMelo Ball, Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller each scored 20-plus points.

The Hornets will be back on the court Wednesday, Feb. 11 when they host the Atlanta Hawks.
