The Brooklyn Nets went into the NBA trade deadline last week with many speculating on what the team could do heading into the deadline, especially with regards to forward Michael Porter Jr. Once the deadline passed, Brooklyn still kept their veteran core of Porter and center Nic Claxton together while making other moves, including releasing guard Cam Thomas, who later signed with the Milwaukee Bucks.

“Brooklyn was perhaps less active than many thought they would be. The Nets used about $11 million of their $15 million in cap space to take on some deals, but weren’t involved in any major transactions,” Keith Smith wrote for Spotrac during his recap of the Nets’ trade deadline. Essentially, Brooklyn waived Thomas, Tyrese Martin, and Hunter Tyson, who they acquired from the Denver Nuggets via trade, while adding guard Ochai Agbaji from the Toronto Raptors and forward Josh Minott from the Boston Celtics.

“Brooklyn was always going to use their cap space to take on unwanted money from other teams,” Smith continued while explaining why the Nets moved the way they did prior to the deadline. “Getting only one additional second-round pick for doing so is a bit disappointing. Having to surrender a pick in the Tyson salary-dump with Denver was a bit weird, but that pick doesn’t look to be a prime asset.”

In all, the Nets acquired two players, Agbaji and Minott, and waived four players, Thomas, Martin, Tyson, and forward Haywood Highsmith, for a net gain of two second-round picks, both in 2032. As of this writing, Brooklyn is projected to have the second-most cap space in the league for the 2026-27 season ($13.3 million) with the Memphis Grizzlies ($13.5 million) being the only team ahead of them in the category.

While some were expecting the Nets to trade away Porter and Claxton for whatever value they can get for those players, Brooklyn general manager Sean Marks appears to have opted to kick those cans down the road, so to speak. For the rest of this season, the Nets will be continuing the development of their young players while hoping that they will finally have some good luck in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft Lottery.
