The Bucks are expected to explore trade destinations for superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo in the summer, but they could make a shocking play to keep him around for the future: trading for another star. The Bucks’ current roster is devoid of other top-end talent next to Giannis, but they could package their upcoming draft picks into a disgruntled star in the summer.

Milwaukee has been known for making big and risky trades to appease Giannis during his tenure, and might get the opportunity to do so once again. Whether it was Jrue Holiday in 2020 or Damian Lillard in 2023, the Bucks are no strangers to trading away future draft capital for a star.

The Bucks could be in the market for another star

After months of rumors, the Bucks were surprisingly inactive at the trade deadline. Giannis remained on the team, and much else didn’t change. Instead, the Bucks chose to take a conservative approach that opens opportunities for younger players.

It’s clear Milwaukee is heading towards a retooling for next season, possibly using their upcoming draft pick in a loaded 2026 NBA Draft. Although the Bucks don’t have full control of their pick, they’re still likely to get a good one. The Bucks will receive the worse pick between their own and the Pelicans’ in this year’s draft.

As the Bucks prepare to develop their young players for the rest of this season, their draft lottery odds should only increase. And the Pelicans are even worse: 15-40 for the fourth-worst record in the league. At worst, the Bucks should receive a top-10 pick in a draft class that’s received a ton of hype.

Combined with a couple of other future tradable picks in 2031 and 2032, the Bucks could make an attractive offer for a disgruntled star in the summer. Of course, it would be a huge risk considering Giannis’ age (36-37) when those picks convey. But that’s the type of risk that the Bucks have shown they’re willing to make for their superstar.

There aren’t currently any reports of disgruntled superstars outside of Ja Morant. But the playoffs should reveal a few more cracks in the foundation of various contenders. If a team that’s racked up an expensive roster disappoints in the playoffs, their front office might look at retooling by offloading a star.

One interesting name to watch in the Bucks’ own division is Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell is nearing 30 years of age and the Cavs have already made a desperate move to build a contender around him. If it comes up short, they could be enticed to move on from their star shooting guard.

Regardless of who becomes available, don’t be surprised if the Bucks are in the hunt for another star to pair with Giannis this summer.
