NEW YORK — The New York Knicks head into the All-Star break unable to stop winning, both on and off the court. They are heading to Cabo after taking 10 of their last 12 games. Off the court, they are adding another piece. Jeremy Sochan plans to sign with the Knicks once he clears waivers, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.

Why Jeremy Sochan’s Path To The Knicks Is One Of A Kind

The Spurs waived Jeremy Sochan after failing to find a trade partner before last week’s deadline. San Antonio selected Sochan with the No. 9 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, and the Baylor product averaged 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists across 212 games. This season, however, he lost his spot in the rotation. He appeared in just 28 of the team’s first 53 games and averaged four points, three rebounds, and one assist in 13 minutes per contest.

After being released by the Spurs yesterday, Jeremy Sochan intends on signing a contract for the rest of the season with the Knicks upon clearing waivers, league sources confirm to @ClutchPoints.

As reported before the trade deadline, the Knicks had pursued a Sochan trade.

Sochan has already established himself as one of the league’s premier perimeter defenders and which makes the Spurs’ decision surprising. By waiving him, San Antonio reinforced its reputation as a player-friendly organization. The front office honored his desire for a larger role rather than keeping him in a diminished one, even though the team likely could have recouped some value in return.

“We were all very aware of his desire to be in the rotation, given more of an opportunity than he had, especially recently,” coach Mitch Johnson said before the Spurs faced Golden State on Wednesday. “We wanted to do right by him and make sure that he had that opportunity before the year was over.”

Knicks Capitalize on a Rare Opportunity

Jeremy Sochan targeted the Knicks because of their championship-caliber roster. Before the trade deadline, New York contacted San Antonio to express interest in him. According to multiple league insiders, that prior interest influenced his decision to join the franchise once he became available.

This situation is highly unusual. Modern NBA contracts for lottery picks typically carry significant guarantees and team options. Teams rarely waive a highly compensated recent lottery selection unless his performance collapses, roster or cap constraints force the move, or injuries derail his trajectory. Sochan fits none of those categories.

The Knicks are adding a do-it-all swingman who plays with intensity, can handle secondary playmaking duties, and defends positions one through four. Teams almost never acquire a player with that profile without surrendering meaningful assets. New York, however, is getting Sochan for nothing. This move comes on the heels of another roster swing that looks like it will be a home run in Jose Alvarado.
