Mac McClung has been around the NBA for years, but sticking with a team’s primary roster has proven to be difficult for the multi-time Slam Dunk Champion.
While McClung has thrived in the G League, recently getting named the MVP in 2024, it hasn’t been enough for a team to give him consistent playing time on a roster.
Seeing how McClung’s career has played out thus far, overseas teams have had their eyes on him since 2023. The veteran guard revealed that teams have attempted to lure him outside of the NBA, but have been unsuccessful. Recently, McClung explained why grinding it out in the States continues to be his biggest gamble.
Mac McClung Overseas? Not an Option Yet
“I take it year by year,” McClung told HoopsHype.
“It’s something that I’ll definitely consider throughout my career. I think this year, I really wanted to keep pursuing playing in the NBA, and that doesn’t mean next year will be the same. It’s a new year every year, and I’ve been really lucky to have a lot of Euroleague and Chinese teams offer me a lot of big contracts that it’s been hard to turn down, but money is not a driving force for me, thank God.”
For the love of the game, McClung wants to continue playing at basketball’s highest level. He is currently getting an opportunity to do so with the Chicago Bulls.
After going undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2021, McClung started his career in the NBA G League. His first call-up was with the Bulls in 2021-2022. Since then, he’s been bouncing around, holding stints with the Los Angeles Lakers, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, and the Indiana Pacers.
This year, McClung has appeared in four games. During his three-game showing with the Pacers, McClung averaged 20.1 points. In a lone showing with the Bulls, he produced 11 points and two assists.
Overseas isn’t out of the question for McClung in the future.
“I really just love the game, and I’m pursuing this, but I definitely will consider overseas, and I’m excited about all the offers I’ve got from them, and I’ll just kind of take it day by day,” he later added.
The rebuilding Bulls are a good spot for McClung. More opportunities to showcase himself at the NBA’s top level could allow for him to avoid the overseas route for another year if all goes well.
