Victor Wembanyama has proven that he is one of the league’s best players. He is only in his third season, but he is ready to keep improving. That would make him an MVP-level player, which San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson believes Wemby deserves to compete for.

This season, Wembanyama is averaging MVP-level numbers with 24.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 2.6 blocks per game. He can do everything on the court, which has led to success for the Spurs. They are the second seed in the loaded Western Conference with a 38-16 record.

Johnson makes a case for Wembanyama to win MVP

Most of the league would agree that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder is the runaway favorite for MVP. That is not the case with the Spurs community, which believes Wembanyama can be considered a contender for the award.

Before this season, the Spurs finished as the 13th seed in the 2024-25 season. Nowadays, they are the second seed with limited changes. Wembanyama is their star player, and he is ready to keep leading the charge for their team as a contender.

Of course, Johnson is supporting his star player because he is the Spurs’ coach. However, he does bring up good points when it comes to a star player’s importance and impact on a team.

“I think it’s realistic just in the sense that I know how much he impacts every game that we play, and leaves imprints in so many different ways on all of the games that we play. We’re gonna go as far as he takes us… Up until this point, he has been the face of the franchise, and in my opinion, that means he should be in the conversation,” Johnson said on SiriusXM.

Moving forward, Johnson and the Spurs will want to see Wembanyama stand out as a superstar. They will build the system around him, and he will reciprocate because Wemby knows that he is the star player who will propel them to title contention.
