The Minnesota Timberwolves host the New Orleans Pelicans for the first time this season on Friday.
The Minnesota Timberwolves look to take a commanding 3-0 season-series lead when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. The Timberwolves won Game 2 of this series in New Orleans, 125-116, in early December. Julius Randle put up a game-high 28 points and added nine rebounds to pick up the load with Anthony Edwards having an uncharacteristically low-scoring night with just 11 points, after he scored a season-high 44 points in Game 1 against the Pelicans two nights before, with Minnesota winning 149-142. The Timberwolves were relatively quiet at the trade deadline, sitting at No. 6 in the West. That is especially the case with the news that the team was rumored to be exploring a trade for Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball. Minnesota instead acquired guard Ayo Dosunmu and forward Julian Phillips from the Chicago Bulls. The biggest news for NOLA at the deadline was the trade of Jose Alvarado to the New York Knicks for shooting guard Dalen Terry. He was just traded from the Bulls to the Knicks. The Pelicans have won just five games on the road this season, and Minnesota will be a 10.5-point favorite to win this series tonight.

The Timberwolves have won five of their last six games after a close 128-126 victory on the road against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. Edwards looked like his vintage self by scoring a game-high 30 points. The Minnesota star scored 13 of those points in the fourth quarter to help fuel an 18-point rally for Minnesota. The Timberwolves pulled off the comeback by outscoring the Raptors 34-22 in the fourth. It was Minnesota’s first win in Toronto since 2004.
New Orleans is heading in the opposite direction, losing four of their last five games. The Pelicans are trying to end a three-game losing streak after dropping to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, 141-137 in overtime. The Bucks may have won the game, but Trey Murphy III easily had the best performance of the night, scoring a game-high 44 points. Murphy III hit an incredible 12 threes in 19 attempts. It was the fifth-highest number of three-pointers made in the history of the game. Klay Thompson with the Golden State Warriors holds the all-time record with 14. New Orleans shot 52 percent from three as a team, making 24. It still wasn’t enough, as Milwaukee scored the first five points of overtime, and it never looked back.
