Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn turned in a career-high scoring game Friday night, and UNLV beat Boise State 86-83 in overtime.

If that story sounds familiar, it’s because it already happened on Jan. 13 at the Thomas & Mack Center as the Rebels came out with a 89-85 win in the first meeting between the teams this season.

That matchup, however, was close all the way through.

This time around on Friday at ExtraMile Arena in Boise, Idaho, the Rebels had to come back from a 23-point deficit.

Gibbs-Lawhorn led the charge by besting his previous 33-point performance with 36 points.

Kimani Hamilton added 13 points for the Rebels (13-12, 8-6 Mountain West). Tyrin Jones scored 12 points.

Forward Drew Fielder led the Broncos (15-10, 7-7) with 27 points.

The game was primed to be a pivotal one for Mountain West standings as both teams entered the matchup with identical 7-6 records in conference play.

But the Rebels didn’t take the court like a team prepared to battle, allowing Boise State to start on a 30-9 run. UNLV gave up four turnovers and 13 uninterrupted points during that stretch.

The Rebels closed the first period by making five of their last six field-goal attempts, including a crucial 3-pointer from Walter Brown, to cut their 23-point deficit to 11 entering halftime.

Late in the second half, Gibbs-Lawhorn scored 12 points to power a 15-0 run over a 2:23 stretch and cut the deficit to two points with 5:55 left to play.

He hit a crucial 3-pointer to tie it at 77 points with 30 seconds remaining, forcing Broncos coach Leon Rice to call a timeout.

Gibbs-Lawhorn attempted a deep contested 3-pointer that didn’t go in at the end of the regulation and sent the game to overtime, where he, Jones, Brown and freshman Issac Williamson combined to outscore the Broncos 9-6.

It was Gibbs-Lawhorn’s fifth straight game with at least 20 points. He’s averaging 18.7 points per game this season.

UNLV is now on a three-game win streak after previously dropping four straight.

Next, the Rebels will host Colorado state on Wednesday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
