MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men’s basketball team was unable to slow down Augsburg University for the second time this season in a 101-84 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) setback on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (16-7, 9-5 MIAC) shot 40-for-64 (62.5 percent) from the field and 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from three-point range while committing just five turnovers to compete a regular-season sweep of St. Olaf (15-8, 11-3 MIAC). Two of the Oles’ three MIAC losses to date this season have come to the Auggies, who shot 42-for-71 (59.2 percent) overall and were an identical 12-for-21 from behind the arc in a 101-77 win in Northfield on Dec. 8.
Despite the loss, St. Olaf remains two games in the loss column ahead in the race for the No. 2 seed in the MIAC Playoffs with one week of the regular season remaining. Carleton College (10-5), Saint John’s University (10-5), Concordia-Moorhead (9-5), and Augsburg (9-5) all have two more losses than St. Olaf, with the Knights and Johnnies having one game remaining and the Cobbers, Auggies, and Oles with two to play.
Junior Chris Willis had easily the top offensive game of his St. Olaf career in the loss, scoring 29 points on 10-for-11 shooting, including going 7-for-8 from beyond the arc, in 20 minutes off the bench. Senior Kobe Kirk, sophomore Rex Lamb, and sophomore AJ Uhl were also in double figures with 16, 15, and 11 points, respectively. The Oles shot 34-for-61 (55.7 percent) from the field and knocked down 11 three-pointers in the loss.
Augsburg shot 24-for-33 (72.7 percent) from the field and 10-for-12 (83.3 percent) from three-point range in a 61-point outburst in the first half. Trent Gomez led the barrage by hitting all six of his shots, five of which were here-pointers, in a 19-point first half off the bench for the hosts. Kirk had 12 of his 16 points in the first half for the Oles, who never led in the game.
St. Olaf was unable to get any closer than the final margin of 17 points in the second half despite Willis going 9-for-9 from the field, including making all seven of his three-pointers, to score 27 points in 13:07. Willis scored 24 points in the final 8:57 of the game, including knocking down three consecutive three-pointers in the span of 1:21 at one point. Prior to Saturday, Willis’ career high as an Ole was 12 points.
In their final road trip of the regular season, the Oles will travel to Concordia-Moorhead for a 7:15 p.m. start on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
