Last week, 40-year-old NBA veteran Chris Paul was finally traded away by the Clippers, after being on the roster but playing in no games for the last couple of months.

Paul is one of the best point guards the game has ever seen, but even though a competitive team like the Raptors traded for him, he won’t be on their roster going forward.

The Raptors made their final decision on Paul’s future on Friday.

Why did the Raptors waive Chris Paul?

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Friday afternoon that the team decided to waive the veteran guard, about a week after acquiring him.

This didn’t shock many, as the original trade for Paul was done for financial reasons on Toronto’s end.

The franchise making this move shows their respect towards Paul, as they decided to waive him, allowing him to sign with a new team as a free agent.

Paul had the chance to sign elsewhere, but ultimately decided that he would retire from the game of basketball before the season ended.

Paul put out a post that consisted of the message, “I am so excited to take with me to the next chapter all the incredible things basketball has taught me. And more importantly that the people have been blessed to meet through basketball have taught me”(via Brett Siegel).
