With each passing week, Arkansas Razorbacks freshman star guard Darius Acuff Jr. continues to shift the SEC Player of the Year conversation from a simple projection in an inevitability.
On the heels of an 88-75 win over the Auburn Tigers, Acuff Jr. delivered another signature performance finishing the game with 31 points, seven assists and committing only one turnover while shooting 10-of-15 from the field, including knocking down seven threes.
Acuff Jr. is in the middle of a offensive surge as of late, scoring 20 or more points in six straight conference games and reaching double figures in every game this season. During this six-game stretch, the Razorbacks are 5-1. That is not empty production.
That is a winning formula.
Historically, he’s already in rare territory. Acuff Jr. became just the second player in Arkansas history to record at least 500 points and 150 assists in a season, joining Lee Mayberry. His seven threes tied for the fifth-most in an SEC game in program history, and his 31 points left him just four shy of Bobby Portis’ freshman scoring record.
Arkansas improves to 19-6 overall on the season and 9-3 in SEC play with Acuff Jr.’s draft stock rising and national media starting to take notice. CBS Sports college basketball insider took to social media after Acuff Jr.’s monster performance illustrating how his season compares to some of the other great guards that have grown under coach John Calipari.
“I’m not comparing Darius Acuff – who also has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3:1 – as a prospect to any other elite PGs who have previously played for John Calipari, but he is playing as well or better than any freshman PG that has ever played for John Calipari,” Rothstein said.
In comparison to the likes of players like former league MVP Derrick Rose, former Sacramento Kings Rookie of the Year Tyreek Evans, former All-Star guard John Wall and current San Antonio Spurs All-Star De’Aaron Fox, Acuff Jr. is on trajectory to have a better freshman season statistically than all of them. All four guards that have one thing in common: they all went top-10 in the NBA Draft.

That spells well for Acuff Jr. who is already regarded as one of the top guard prospects in the 2026 class. In Bleacher Report’s latest NBA mock draft, he is projected to go 7th overall teaming up with Dallas Mavericks star rookie forward Cooper Flagg. In a well-regarded draft class with a definitive top-3, Acuff Jr. finds himself as one of the top guards off the board and the top player coming out of the SEC.
Whether you cut the tape on or simply check the stats, it all says the same thing: Darius Acuff Jr. is on track to becoming the most productive guard to ever play under coach John Calipari. A feat that cements among elite company and a comparison that will drive up his stock as he makes his push for the 2026 NBA Draft.
