Dylan Mingo, who is rated as a five-star recruit and the No. 9 overall player and No. 2 point guard in the recruiting class of 2026 by ESPN, committed to head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels Tuesday morning. Mingo chose Carolina over finalists Penn State – where Mingo’s brother, Kayden, currently plays – Baylor and Washington.
A six-foot-five guard from Long Island Lutheran High School in New York, Mingo is the second player in the class of 2026 to commit to UNC. He joins Maximo Adams, a four-star wing from California who committed to the Tar Heels in November.
“Mingo is a big guard with length, versatility, natural feel for the game, and an ability to get wherever he wants with the ball in his hands,” writes Adam Finkelstein, director of scouting for 247 Sports. “He has a tight handle, can break his defender down with combo moves, navigate a crowded lane instinctively, make reads out of ball screens, utilize both hands, and create for himself and others.”
Finkelstein also complimented Mingo’s rebounding ability and defense, though warned the young guard can “occasionally be nonchalant” with the basketball and isn’t an efficient outside shooter.
Mingo’s commitment to UNC ends a long recruiting odyssey. He was supposed to visit the Dean Smith Center for Carolina’s game against Kansas the night of Nov. 7, but his flight to North Carolina was cancelled as the airline industry struggled with the recent federal government shutdown. Mingo eventually did make his way to Chapel Hill, attending the Tar Heels’ game against North Carolina Central the next week.
Afterward, Mingo was expected to make his decision in January, but eventually pushed that date back to Feb. 17.
“I feel like pretty much everybody has to dream of playing [at UNC] one day,” Mingo told Rivals’ Joe Tipton. “It’s a prestigious program, so just seeing how many players in the past have put on the jersey, Michael Jordan, Joel Berry, players like that, have just done great there.”
