INDIANAPOLIS — Pacers forward Obi Toppin got limited action in practice Tuesday but still has some time to go before his return to action, coach Rick Carlisle said.
Carlisle said that both Toppin — who has been out since the season’s third game with a stress fracture in his right foot — and center Ivica Zubac “did some things” in the first practice after the All-Star break and that they are both making steady but gradual progress. However, Carlisle also said “it’s gonna be a while” before either player returns and said he could not specify what “a while,” means in this case.

Toppin averaged 14.0 points and 6.7 rebounds in the first three games before leaving with an injury in the season’s third game on Oct. 26 in Minnesota against the Timberwolves. Since being acquired by the Pacers from the Knicks in July of 2023, Toppin is averaging 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, mostly in a bench role. He has established himself as an offensive weapon as a transition finisher and has made 69.8% of his 2-point shots with the Pacers including 75.9% of his attempts within 3 feet of the basket. He’s also shooting a healthy 37.7% from 3-point range with Indiana. Whenever Toppin gets back he gives the Pacers a frontcourt option who can play any position from small forward to center with power forward being his primary position.
