After a shock elimination at the hands of the New York Knicks, the Boston Celtics have some soul-searching to do. Brad Stevens is expected to make significant changes to Joe Mazzulla’s roster, primarily due to the astronomical cost of the current team, which projects to be close to $500 million next season once luxury taxes are accounted for.
Boston’s situation became even more precarious when Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles tendon injury. He is likely to miss the entire 2025-26 season as he recovers from surgery and builds his fitness back up. Therefore, the cost of the roster doesn’t match the team’s goals for next season.
In a May 23 episode of the “Game Theory” podcast, hosts Sam Vecenie and Bryce Simon discussed the Celtics‘ current roster construction and their potential offseason. The duo also discussed luxury tax restrictions, Boston’s impending free agents and potential trade targets.
