In recent years, the Boston Celtics have been constructed to contend for a championship. Brad Stevens made multiple “win now” moves during the summer of 2023, acquiring Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Those moves quickly led to a championship. However, following Jayson Tatum’s Achilles tendon injury, the Celtics must change course.

It’s unlikely Boston is going to be a contending team next season. There’s even a chance the Celtics could be out of the title race for the next two years. As such, Stevens must make some tough decisions this summer. It’s highly unlikely we see Boston run things back with the same rotation. The roster is far too expensive when a championship isn’t a genuine possibility.

During a May 24 episode of the “Gil’s Arena” podcast, former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas predicted sweeping changes to the current roster. He believes Stevens will make multiple moves, both to ease the luxury tax burden and to adjust the timeline for when Tatum is back in the rotation and (hopefully) playing at an All-NBA level once again.
